LEDs and sensors are essential to cope with the societal challenges – they contribute to the digitization and to a significant reduction of the ecological impact towards zero footprint. While the superior efficiency and lifetime of visible and infrared LEDs clearly address the energy consumption of opto-electronic devices, future applications are in particular enabled by miniaturized and integrated smart LEDs and systems. The miniaturization of LEDs has become a game changing technology. It strongly impacts AR/VR application and consumer display technologies, but also automotive interior and exterior applications improving road safety and communication between analog and digital road users. The extension of the emission wavelengths is based on novel materials and extends the spectral range from UV-C to infrared. Thereby the quality of life is and will be enhanced by emerging applications such as e.g., mercury-free and mobile disinfection, food-safety, and well-being.
